What's being built at Abernathy

TeraWulf and Fluidstack formed a joint venture in late 2025 to build 168 MW of critical IT load—240 MW gross—on a 120-acre site at Abernathy in Hale County. It is a 25-year hosting deal worth about $9.5 billion in contracted revenue, with Google backstopping roughly $1.3 billion of Fluidstack's lease obligations so the project could be financed. Anthropic named Texas as the first stop in its $50 billion U.S. data center build with Fluidstack, and this is one of the sites that has been reported as part of it.

Commissioning is expected in the second half of 2026, and the venture holds the right to build further phases here. Fit-out and commissioning is electrician-heavy work, and at $8–10 million per megawatt the money says a lot of people will be on site for a while.

Abernathy is a farm town of about 2,800 people straight up I-27 from Lubbock. Most crews will look at Lubbock first. The case for staying closer is simple: an eighteen-mile morning instead of a forty-minute one, and a weekly rate that isn't set by a city.
